Crooked River Zen Center

For 12 years our sangha operated under the name of Jijuyu-ji Zen Sangha of Cleveland. In December 2015 we changed our name to Crooked River Zen Center.

We are part of the Phoenix Cloud lineage whose founder was Kobun Chino Roshi (1938-2002). Kobun came to San Francisco from Japan in 1967 at the request of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi to serve as his attendant at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center.

Our practice is inspired by the teachings of Eihei Dogen, the founder of Soto Zen Buddhism in 13th century Japan.  Translated here is one of his most important texts, Jijuyu Samadhi, which is contained in Dogen’s larger work, Bendowa. { English translation: The Wholehearted Way }

To study the Buddha Way is to study the self.
To study the self is to forget the self.
To forget the self is to be actualized by all things.

~ Eihei Dogen Zenji

Buddha

Zen practice is to get to our True Mind, the mind not accessible to thinking. This mind cannot be consciously known by ordinary efforts. An unusual effort is necessary. This effort is zazen.

~ Shunryu Suzuki Roshi
